Egypt has a lot of wonderful places to visit regardless of which season of the year it is. I traveled there during the entire summer of 2018 and have therefore curated the places below as the best places to visit Egypt. I will structure these places in form of cities and then delve deeper into the actual sites and places that stood out to me. Before you take your trip, you should check out my guide on the things to know before visiting Egypt.
Dahab is one of the most beautiful beach cities located in the Southern Sinai area of Cairo. It is famous for its beautiful snorkeling and skydiving sites, beach buggies through the desert and the famous Mount Sinai climb. This is also the perfect destination for backpackers and one of the best places to visit in Egypt generally.
It started out as a Bedouin fishing village and grew to the beautiful beach resort it is now. Some of the activities to do in Dahab includes snorkeling and scuba diving at Blue hole. It is known widely as one of the best places to scuba dive but also as one of the most dangerous places too. From its name, the water is blue where there is a sinkhole that divers use to dive.
Other activities to do include climbing Mount Sinai, or also known as Mount Moses, where Moses from the Bible climbed to get the 10 commandments. There are also Bedouin parties in the mountains at night where you get there using trucks or camels. trucks are easier to use to climb and wave through the desert roads
We also took a drive through the desert on beach buggies which was extremely fun. they are really easy to use and the adrenaline rush was so exciting.
Another resort city is Sharm el-sheikh located between the Sinai Desert and the Red Sea. It is not far from Dahab( literally 94km from its sister town). During the day I found the town to be deserted and it looked like everyone was taking a hiatus. In the night, however, everybody came out to play. We went to Naama Bay which is the perfect hub for tourists. It looked like a town square with places to eat, restaurants, beautiful open spaces to relax and drink, bars lining up the place, and a variety of shops and hotels for guests. It is the most lively place in all of Sharm.
Giza is literally the most widely known place because of the Pyramids. You haven’t really been to Egypt if you haven’t been to the pyramids. The Great Pyramids of Giza are some of the most magnificent man-made erections and one of the renowned seven wonders of the world. The three largest and best pyramids are located at Giza where they were built. At some point, it was even rumored that aliens built it. It is located at the west bank of river Nile just at the outskirts of Cairo. Also at the site of the site of the pyramids at Giza is the Great Sphinx. It is among the world’s largest sculptures carved from a single piece of limestone. it takes the shape of a lions body and a human head adorned with a royal headdress.
We have all heard at some point of Alexander the great. He was one of the rulers of Egypt and founder of Alexandria the city. It is the second largest city in Egypt and also serves as a port city and industrial center. It is located next to the Mediterranean sea in Lower Egypt. Alexandria boasts of having one of the largest libraries of the ancient world, the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. The library has a lot of history dating from before the 7th century on its foundation, the books it houses, the fire that nearly destroyed it and the modern reconstruction. It is the largest library on the planet and can successfully hold 8 billion books. It is worth a visit.
While in Alexandria, I also visited the Citadel of Qaitbay. The citadel was built on one of the seven wonders of the ancient world which is the Lighthouse of Alexandria. The citadel was built as a defensive stronghold for the mediterranean sea coast. It now serves as a popular tourist attraction where many young people take field trips.
North Coast is another coastal town which borders the mediterranean sea. It is characterized by white sandy beaches and a number of upscale resorts to cater to tourists. The hotels in North Coast are fancy, luxurious which services people who want to enjoy some quiet time and relax by the sea.
Luxor was also an ancient Egyptian town. I visited Luxor in the summer when it was really hot. It is the best place to visit for history buffs as it is rich in the history of rulers of Egypt. It hosts some of the ancient tombs of pharaohs such as Tutankhamen (King Tut) and historical sites such as the Luxor temple, Valley of the Kings and Karnak temple. Luxor is separated into the West Bank and East Bank.
The east bank represents the locality area of Luxor where a majority of the tourists arrive. It’s also where the airport and go-bus depots are located. We arrived by go-bus at the east bank the crossed the Nile to where our hotel was located at the west bank. The East bank hosts the Luxor temple, Karnak temple and the Corniche which connects locals and travelers to other parts including crossing to the West Bank.
The West Bank is more of museums and tombs. it is where the Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens are located. The West Bank also harbors the Temple of Hatshepsut, Memorial tombs of Ramses I and II and tombs of the nobles.
The Nile is lined with Feluccas which are a mode of transport along and across the Nile. They connect the east bank to the west bank. The owners of the feluccas are full of vibrant personalities and it’s a good way to make friends and local guides.
Aswan is Egypt’s sunniest and strategic southern city. The Nile at Aswan is more profound and serene and is perfect for tourists. Feluccas dot the banks of the Nile which provides for transportation or even just sitting back and enjoying the river. It is rich in Nubian culture where you can go get henna tattoos, visit the souk and get spices and little trinkets and souvenirs. In addition, its one of the best places to visit around May if you to relax and fully enjoy what Aswan has to offer.
Expect extreme heat when going in the summer. The best time to visit Aswan is during the fall or winter where temperatures are within 17°c to 27°c
Hurghada is another resort coastal city that boasts of pristine coastline. It is a water sports destination as it also has one of the best diving spots in Egypt if not in the world. The coast is decorated with beautiful and colorful coral reefs and marine life. It is a good place for experienced scuba divas to enjoy their sport.
It is also a hub to many luxurious resorts, hotels, and villas along the coast. It is one of the best places to visit if you intend to splurge a bit into the high-end accommodation offered.
Quad biking is an activity that is offered in this city where you take the buggies into the Sahara desert and enjoy a ride. There are also Bedouin guides that lead you through and offer some of the most delicious Egyptian tea.
The Siwa Oasis is located in the Western Desert. The area is rich in culture as the original inhabitants of Berber descent are located there. It is a highly topographical place with olive and palm groves growing everywhere. Some of the interesting things to do in Siwa include Swim in Cleopatra’s bath which locals believe that Cleopatra took a swim there. Also, you can sandboard and drift in the desert, visit the locals and buy colorful, cheap and beautiful souvenirs and visit the ruins of Shali fortress.
It is advisable to best visit the place in the winter where the temperatures are lower. In the summer, the temperature rises to between 35°c to 40°c
The Black and White Desert
The black and white desert is also located in the western desert. The black desert is characterized by black hills made of quartz. The story is that long ago during the formation of the earth the area was full of active volcanoes which erupted lava that with many years later solidified into hard black rock surfaces.
The white desert was also believed to have been a seabed which dried up and the corals and marine life form the limestone rocks that are located there. The rocks take shape of brilliant but weird shapes such as the shape of a chicken head.
It is advisable to visit the place in the winter as temperatures in the summer can reach up to 35°c to 40°c
